Question Time: One student takes the microphone at the start of each class and asks other students some questions that we learn together such as ‘Who is your best friend and why?’/’Who is your favorite singer/ What is your favorite animal?/ What did you do at the weekend?’ etc.

Vocab Actions: We leant actions for our  new vocabulary in the ‘How much is that Doggie…?’ song and chose different students to play the part of the dog.

Quizzes: We chose captains, team names and divided up for quizzes on our themes of opposites and other vocabulary. I also used the whiteboard to draw images which the teams had to guess the answer to.

TV Time: I interviewed each of the students individually for our ‘TV’ show (with willing audience participation) where we discussed our favorite songs, our favorite books, our best friends, our families, and showed our talents to the others such as dancing and singing in english. The children are encouraged to converse in english and to ask questions to the ‘guest’ also.

DECEMBER

WINTER WONDERLAND

Dear Parents,

December has been a short but very exciting and productive month. The children learned not only new vocabulary but also many songs.

The Christmas tree is a wonderful object to practice prepositions of place. For example:  Where is the star? The star is on the tree. Where is the snowman? The snowman is beside the tree. Where is the present? The present is under the tree. Where are the presents? The presents are under the tree.

We also enjoyed the Hollywood Folly sing-a-long this month. It was a delight to gather around the piano and sing Mary had a Little Lamb, Baa Baa Black Sheep and many beloved Christmas carols.

Attached is a short summary of what we have learned this month. The children have participated well and learned many new things.  It’s been an especially fun and exciting month!

Dear Parents

This month we focused on the theme of:

TRANSPORTATION

Key Vocabulary

car/bus/bicycle/boat/ship/scooter/motorbike/skateboard/plane/horse/train/metro/taxi/submarine/rocket/helicopter/roller skates/unicorn/sheep/running/walking/hopping/flying

How do you come to school in the morning?

What is your favorite way of traveling?

Which is a faster way to travel, a horse or a ship? a bus or a scooter? etc

Which is a slower way to travel, a rocket or a bus?

Games and activities:

We invented actions to represent each mode of transport and took turns using our ‘magic finger’ to ask our neighbor to act out ‘cycling a bike’ or ‘rowing a boat’.

We completed worksheets related to modes of transportation.

We spent time talking about imaginary modes of transport and the children drew and colored their transportation ‘hybrids’ such as a submarine rocket, a ship on a skateboard etc.

Key Songs:

1) We Wish You a Merry Christmas

2) Santa Claus, He Got Stuck!

3) Baa, baa, black sheep

4) Row, row your boat

school

Dear Parents,

This month was a short month due to the holidays, and we had a lot of fun! The children are confident in speaking English together and are full of suggestions for our classes. We focused on our theme:

Back to School!

We learnt lots of new classroom vocabulary including: pen, pencil, coloring pencil, ruler, glue-stick, pencil-case, chalk, paint, whiteboard, scissors, chair, table, class-room, pupils, teacher, book, copy-book, school bus, school.

Drawing Game: To reinforce our learning, we played a drawing game on the whiteboard. The children would ask me to draw a particular classroom item in the classroom.

E.g. « Draw a coloring pencil! »/ »Draw a school bus. »

Team Play: We chose a line of classroom objects to put on the table. I chose two captains who picked and named their teams. The children learnt to follow the rules of the game and worked together using english only. Each group removed 2 objects and the other team had to guess what was missing.

E.g. « Ready? »/ »What’s missing? »/ »The ruler is missing! »/ »How many points have we got? »

TV Interview: We played our interview game, whereby the students came one by one to be interviewed by me about their school and friends. They talked freely with less emphasis on ‘complete accuracy’ and more emphasis on ‘flow of English speaking and enjoyment of speaking English together’.

Halloween: We talked about Halloween. The children chose their favorite costume ideas and we created a poster together using their art work. They chose to be:

Princesses/Dragons/Ghosts/Witches/Superheroes/Pumpkins/Peter Pan/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

See you soon,

Mr Carey’s GS English:September Review

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful month based around the theme: All about me!

We focused on: Introductions:

« How are you? » and « How do you do today? » and various replies such as « I am fine thank you, and you? », « I am so-so today », « I am angry and sleepy today » etc.

Eyes and Hair:

« What color is your hair? », « My hair is blond/brown/black », « What color are your eyes? », « My eyes are blue » etc, « What color are HIS/HER eyes? » « His/ Her eyes are… »

Favourite:

« What is your favourite food? » « My favourite food is…. », « What is your favourite toy? », « What is your favourite colour? »

Friends:

« Who is your best friend? » « My best friend is… », « Who is your favourite teacher? », « My favourite teacher is… », « What color is your best friend’s hair…? »

We completed various worksheets/coloring sheets based on the topic and read several book titles whilst using the pictures to describe the characters we see. We used our microphone to encourage the children to ask each other the questions and we played a ‘TV’ game whereby the children come to take the a seat (one-by-one or in pairs) to be interviewed by their teacher on ‘TV’. We start by talking about ourselves and then I allow the children  to lead the directions, which leads to very interesting conversations and fun, all in English. Well done to your children on an excellent first month!

Best,

Mr Carey
